SC/Rambler Prototype?
History of First SC/Ramblers Comes to Light!

by Edward Leb

Note: This information first appeared in an ebay ad where Ed was selling the car, which accounts for it's marketing slant. It is his story, and no attempt to verify the information has been made by the Rambler Rogue site.

This is the original 1969 Hurst SC/Rambler pre-production prototype produced by Hurst (Dave Landrith and H.L. Shahan) hand made car not the AMC factory. This is one of the SC/Rambler preproduction cars built for the Orange County Auto Show to promote the soon to be production models. This car was used for the press release, time trials and made available for the press to test drive and preview the new car as well as a template for future production of this car. The 1st 2 were destroyed in accordance with the government policies and safety standards. This car was built in the Hurst factory engine, stripes etc., then shipped to California to be tweaked by H.L. Shahan with a triple grind valve job, Doug's headers, Holley and Comp Clutch, etc.

This car ran low 12'S and high eleven's when finished. This car is history and was showed in the first ever revealing of the Hurst SC/Rambler in Orange County and all road test magazines, drag trials in Hollywood/Miami back in 1969.

Do not be fooled by other SC/Ramblers or clones. This car and history has been tracked and sought after by Mike Lews and others. This is the car! See the photo of the hood scoop flapper and you will know what I am speaking of. Also, this car was featured in all magazines used to promote the sale of the soon to be produced SC/Ramblers.

When the first 50 SC/Ramblers were built they came from AMC with 343 engines and changed by Hurst with a pallet of crate 390 motors. Then implemented and ran producton line with 390's in them. This was the 3rd ever SC/Rambler to have a 390 put into it as a preproduction prototype for future design and production! This car was donated to H.L. Shehan for the design and help he dedicated to the production and building of this rare muscle car. Shehan then gave the car to his daughter to drive and she refused and he then sold the car to a collector in California (2nd owner) with the original cert of origin. The second owner transfered the cert of origin to a Florida title in 1992 with the original 7450 miles. I am the 4th owner of this VERY VERY RARE MUSCLE CAR!

The SC/Rambler is in excellent condition and requires an expert to restore and replace necessary OEM parts to make 100 percent. No tears in original seats, tach, mirrors, wheels, engine. The floors and metal are all solid. Body has some minor chips and scratches over time, carpet is perfect, like new, and a/c was installed by dealer and H.L. Shehan. I am told this car at one time was painted blue for H.L. Shahan's daughter then repainted back to original scheme. Everyhting on this car is in excellent shape and all working order. The average Joe looks at this car and thinks it is awesome and could be showed but I know different. This car needs to be restored by an expert (which I am not) or put into a musuem, as it is excellent condition and can be driven cross country if you desire today. 100% driver and dependable! I have only driven car approximately 5 miles since I owned it and 3rd owner strored this car before his death.
